Explanatory Coherence and the Impossibility of Confirmation by Coherence

چکیده
The coherence of independent reports provides a strong reason to believe that the are true. This plausible claim has come under attack from recent work in Bayesian epistemology. shows that, certain probabilistic conditions, cannot increase probability target claim. These theorems taken demonstrate epistemic coherentism is untenable. To date no one investigated how these results bear on different conceptions coherence. I investigate this situation using Thagard’s ECHO model explanatory natural representation evidential significance multiple reports.

Probabilistic Networks and Explanatory Coherence
Causal reasoning can be understood qualitatively in terms of explanatory coherence or quantitatively in terms of probability theory. Comparison of these approaches can be done by looking at computational models, using my explanatory coherence networks and Pearl’s probabilistic ones. The explanatory coherence program ECHO can be given a probabilistic interpretation, but there are many conceptual...
متن کاملImpossibility Result for Coherence Rankings
If we receive information from multiple independent and partially reliable information sources, then whether we are justified to believe these information items is affected by how reliable the sources are, by how well the information coheres with our background beliefs and by how internally coherent the information is. We consider the following question. Is coherence a separable determinant of ...
متن کاملOn the alleged impossibility of coherence
If coherence is to have justificatory status, as some analytical philosophers think it has, it must be truth-conducive, if perhaps only under certain specific conditions. This paper is a critical discussion of some recent arguments that seek to show that under no reasonable conditions can coherence be truth-conducive. More specifically, it considers Bovens and Hartmann’s and Olsson’s “impossibi...
متن کاملCoherence and Confirmation through Causation
Coherentism maintains that coherent beliefs are more likely to be true than incoherent beliefs, and that coherent evidence provides more confirmation of a hypothesis when the evidence is made coherent by the explanation provided by that hypothesis. Although probabilistic models of credence ought to be well-suited to justifying such claims, negative results from Bayesian epistemology have sugges...
متن کاملThagard Testimony , Credibility , and Explanatory Coherence
This paper develops a descriptive and normative account of how people respond to testimony. It postulates a default pathway in which people more or less automatically respond to a claim by accepting it, as long as the claim made is consistent with their beliefs and the source is credible. Otherwise, people enter a reflective pathway in which they evaluate the claim based on its explanatory cohe...
